A Traveler's Guide to Visiting the Hungarian Railway History Park

If you’re coming to Budapest with kids, or if you're a railway enthusiast, then you simply can’t miss a visit to the Hungarian Railway History Park and the Hungarian Railway Museum. This is Europe’s largest open-air railway entertainment park, drawing in locomotive fans from all over the world.

Featuring an original roundhouse from 1911, the park has 50 steam engines (12 operational and all restored including one built in 1870) that are guaranteed to make the day of any “Thomas and Friends” or “Chuggington” fan!

At the Hungarian Railway History Park, you and your family can enjoy a variety of interactive activities. The four activities are:

  • Turntable Ride
  • Handcar Ride
  • Motorized Handcar Ride
  • Garden Railway

You can experience what it was like to operate a real steam engine or travel in an inspection car converted for rails. A hand-cart, a turntable for trains, a powerful engine simulator, and a horse tram are also there for you to try out.

Two miniature steam locomotives and diesel locomotives circle around the park, which features miniature tracks and railway signals just like in the real world.

The shining jewel of the park is an elegant dining cart from the 1912 Orient Express. Parked at the railway station for guests to see, this dining cart represents adventure and luxury from an era long gone.

From time to time, even the big engines are brought back to life for the “Nostalgia Rides” leaving from Nyugati Station to the Park. On St. Nicholas’ Day be sure to board the “Santa Express” to grant your kids an unforgettable delight.

The park organizes a wealth of interesting events that change every week. Therefore it’s always a good idea to check out the latest news on their website.

Hours & Location

The only downside? Because of the harsh Hungarian winter the park is only open from April until November, with special openings for Christmas and selected events.

The opening hours for the park are 10am-6pm daily, with the exception of Mondays when the park is closed. Located at 1142 Budapest, Tatai út 95, it’s in the northeast section of the city. Although located a bit farther than other sightseeing hotspots, it’s a great family-friendly place to visit when you travel to Budapest, Hungary.

For entrance, the park costs 2.000 HUF per person, with children under the age of 3 entering for free and children aged 3-18 paying 1.000 HUF per person. It’s also possible to purchase family tickets at a discounted rate.
