Hidden Gems: the János Hill Chairlift and Children’s Railway.

Did you know that Budapest is the only European Capital to have a chairlift (Libegő in Hungarian) within its borders?

When most people think of Budapest, they picture the Danube, the Chain Bridge, the Parliament and large servings of goulash. However, the Hungarian Capital has way more than that to offer!

One of these hidden gems is the Jànos Hill and Normafa area in Buda. Suprisingly not many foreigners know that Budapest is surrounded by beautiful green hills, where locals often take refuge to escape city chaos and breath in some very fresh air.

The chairlift leading to the top of János Hill was created exactly for this purpose. The leisurely 15-minute ride among lush green hills offers breathtaking views of the city.

You’ll be able to see the Parliament, the Danube and many of the city’s attractions from a completely different perspective. And once you reach the top if you like hiking or walking you’ll find plenty to explore.

The area is beautiful year-round. In winter some people even try skiing or sleighing on its once operational slope, while in the summer it’s the perfect place to escape the city heat.

After taking buses n.21 and 21A from Széll Kalmán tér, you’ll reach the chairlift with a 20-30 minute walk across the forest from Normafa Hill. There are no steep inclines here so it’s definitely a pleasurable stroll.

Another more interesting option is to take the Children’s Railway to Normafa Hill.

This narrow-gauge railway is the largest Children’s Railway in the world and as the name suggests it’s entirely operated by (supervised) kid except for, obliviously, the driver.

Its upper stations in János Hegy and Viràgvolgy are the closest to the chairlift.

Normafa Hill is also a great place for strolling around and taking in some pure air. It’s also well known for its restaurants making it a favorite place to eat for many Hungarians.
