The Inner City stretches approximately from Margaret Bridge down to Liberty Bridge. It contains some of Budapest's most well-known icons, delicious restaurants, and thought-provoking cultural landmarks.

Although a popular stomping ground for tourists, there are also local haunts here, with eateries popular with residents and coffee shops catering to both Budapestian regulars and visitors.

Sights Around Belváros

Budapest Danube Promenade

One of the best things to do in Belváros-Lipótváros is completely free. Simply walk along the Danube promenade and take in the sites. From our flats near Gellért Hill, you're able to see picturesque views of Pest. Now is your chance to see them up close!

Meander along the Danube and take in beautiful views of the river and Castle Hill on the opposite shore. Sit on one of the many benches, breathe fresh air, and take in the sights.

Here you can linger at the sobering Shoes on the Danube sculpture installation--a memorial to the Jews who were taken from the Budapest ghetto and forced to take off their shoes before being executed by the Arrow Cross Party during World War II.

As you walk the bank, you'll be able to pass all of Budapest's iconic bridges, from the sculpture-laden Margaret Bridge to the recently renovated Chain Bridge to the soaringly modern Elizabeth Bridge.

Budapest Parliament Building

The Budapest Parliament Building is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city of Budapest. Located on the banks of the Danube River at Kossuth Lajos Square, it is a stunning example of Neo-Gothic architecture and an important symbol of Hungary's history and culture.

Built between 1885 and 1904, the building was designed by Hungarian architect Imre Steindl. It features a symmetrical facade with a central dome, two symmetrical wings, and a grand staircase.

Inside the building, visitors can explore the many chambers and corridors of the Hungarian Parliament. Tours fill up quickly, so be sure to book ahead!

Puskin Artmozi

Puskin Artmozi is a popular art cinema located in the heart of Budapest's Belváros district. It is one of the oldest cinemas in the city, having been established in 1952. The cinema has two screens and shows both classic and contemporary films from around the world. This means you can get your independent and art house film fix, or catch one of the latest blockbusters.

The interior of Puskin Artmozi is an attraction in itself. It's decorated with vintage posters and photographs from its long history, providing a time-warp effect. The cinema also has a café and bar, where you can enjoy a drink or snack before or after the movie.

Hungarian National Museum

The Hungarian National Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in Budapest's Belváros district. Easily accessible in the city center, it houses a vast collection of artifacts and artworks that tell the story of Hungary’s rich history.

The museum was founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchényi (originally as a library), and its collections have grown ever since. It now contains over 1.5 million objects, including archaeological artifacts, coins, books and manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, and more.

The museum also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. These often focus on specific aspects of Hungarian culture or history, such as folk art or the country’s relationship with other nations.

Fun fact: if you visit Budapest during the summer, you'll find that tango lovers gather to have open-air milongas on the museum steps. Bring your dance shoes, some cash, and join in!

Budapest Great Market Hall

The Budapest Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok) is a must-see destination for any visitor to Budapest. Located in the heart of the Belváros district, this historic market hall has been a part of the city since 1897.

The Great Market Hall is home to over 100 vendors selling various fresh produce, meats, cheeses, spices, and other Hungarian specialties. The market is also a great place to find souvenirs and gifts, as well as traditional Hungarian clothing and crafts. Shop as the locals shop and pen this into your Belváros itinerary!

Vörösmarty Tér

Vörösmarty Tér is a public square located in the heart of the Belváros district. Situated at the junction of the high-end Fashion Street and the famous "shopping street" Vaci Utca, it serves as a hub for shopping and dining. The square and streets are lined with cafes and restaurants where weary shoppers can rest their feet in between purchases.

The square was named after Mihály Vörösmarty, a famous Hungarian poet who lived in the 19th century. It is home to several important landmarks, including the old-world coffeehouse, Gerbeaud Café, and the Vigadó Concert Hall.

The square is also a popular spot for people-watching. During the summer months, you can find street performers and musicians around its vicinity, and during the winter, it's occupied by one of Budapest's most famous Christmas markets.

Parisi Udvar

Judging by the overflowing tables, people often flock to Drum Cafe to try classic Hungarian food. Yes, at first glance, it looks like a typical tourist restaurant with pictures of the menu hanging outside, but we'll make an exception for the price and the sheer number of options.

The restaurant won't get any Michelin stars (that's the next one on our list) but think of this as the perfect place to get a crash course in Hungarian cuisine.

Onyx Restaurant Budapest is a popular destination for food lovers in the city's Belváros district. Located in the heart of the city, Onyx offers an exquisite dining experience with its modern Hungarian cuisine and unique atmosphere, not to mention its unwavering dedication to sustainability.
